Background
In the times marked by deepening social, economic, and ecological crises, creative expression becomes both a political and ethical act. Across histories and movements, poetry and songs have played a central role in questioning power, articulating dissent, nurturing hope, and amplifying voices that are often unheard. They have helped people name injustice, imagine alternatives, and collectively dream of dignity, equality, and freedom.
Writing songs and poems allows individuals and communities to reflect on lived realities, interrogate dominant narratives, and communicate complex ideas in accessible, emotionally resonant forms. At the same time, the act of writing also enables writers to examine their own locations, biases, and privileges.
Songs, poetry, and slogans have long been central to resistance movements, carrying the politics and spirit of struggles such as the Narmada Bachao Andolan, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan( MKSS), Chengara, and feminist movements. Cultural collectives and artists emerging from these spaces have shaped social and political consciousness through music and performance. While songs have sometimes been misused to spread hate, they have also powerfully upheld values of justice, love, and the Constitution. This workshop is rooted in that tradition and seeks to create a collective space where participants can explore writing as a creative, reflective, and political practice.
About the Workshop
This four-day Song and Poetry writing workshop is designed as an intensive, participatory learning space for individuals interested in writing songs and poems grounded in social realities. The workshop will focus on nurturing participants’ creative voices and guiding them through the process of transforming their experiences, observations, memories, and reflections into songs and poems.
Through discussions, writing exercises, collective listening, group feedback, and performances, participants will explore:
- How songs and poetry function as tools of social communication, reflection and resistance
- The basic elements of songwriting and poetry—imagery, rhythm, melody, structure, voice, and emotion
- Translating everyday experiences, political concerns, and memories into creative expressions
- Creating songs and poems on themes of dignity, justice, equality, peace, and democratic values
- Presenting and performing one’s work in collective spaces
The workshop will also encourage collective processes, shared reflections, and community singing/recitation to foster a sense of community among participants. By the end of the workshop, each participant is expected to produce at least one original song or poem, and groups may also collaboratively create new works.
The workshop will be conducted in both Hindi and English.
Who Should Apply
This workshop is open to:
- Young people and students interested in creative writing and songwriting.
- Social activists, educators, and cultural workers who wish to use songs and poetry in their work
- Writers, poets, musicians, and performers seeking to deepen their practice
- Individuals engaged in social movements who want to communicate their concerns creatively
Applicants should have a genuine interest in writing songs or poetry. Prior formal training is not mandatory, but participants should be willing to actively write, share, and engage in collective learning processes.
Resource Persons
Charul Bharwada and Vinay Mahajan
The workshop will be facilitated by Charul and Vinay, singers and songwriters by passion. Their songs are inspired by their field experiences with diverse communities such as farmers, pastoralists, salt makers, tribal groups, and engagements with various social movements and activists. They have been conducting songwriting workshops across diverse social contexts. Known for their simple yet powerful lyrics and grounded compositions, they bring a pedagogy that combines creativity, reflection, and social commitment.

Participant Contribution
We hope that participants will contribute an amount of Rs. 4,000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel of participants will have to be borne by the organization/the participants.
Do not let money impede your application. Need-based fee waivers are available. We have a limited number of scholarships, so please apply for a fee waiver if you really need it. Do remember that there may be others who need it more than you. A fee waiver will be offered to people from marginalized groups and non-funded social, political, or student movements.

गीत और कविताएँ लिखना व्यक्तियों और समुदायों को अपने अनुभवों पर विचार करने, प्रमुख कथाओं की जांच करने, और जटिल विचारों को सरल, भावनात्मक रूप से गूंजने वाले रूपों में व्यक्त करने की अनुमति देता है। साथ ही, लिखने की प्रक्रिया लेखकों को अपनी स्वयं की स्थिति, पूर्वाग्रह, और विशेषाधिकार की जाँच करने में भी सक्षम बनाती है।
गीत, कविता, और नारे लंबे समय से प्रतिरोध आंदोलनों में केंद्रीय रहे हैं, नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन, मजदूर किसान शक्ति संगठन (MKSS), चेंगारा, और नारीवादी आंदोलनों जैसी संघर्षों में गीतों और कविताओं ने सक्रिय भागीदारी निभाई है ।यह कार्यशाला उसी परंपरा में निहित है और एक सामूहिक स्थान बनाने का प्रयास करती है जहाँ प्रतिभागी लेखन को रचनात्मक, चिंतनशील, और राजनीतिक अभ्यास के रूप में खोज सकें।
कार्यक्रम के बारे में:
यह चार दिन की गीत और कविता लेखन कार्यशाला उन लोगों के लिए बनाई गई है जो सामाजिक वास्तविकताओं पर आधारित गीत और कविताएँ लिखना चाहते हैं। इस कार्यशाला का मकसद प्रतिभागियों की रचनात्मक आवाज़ को बढ़ाना और उन्हें उनके अनुभव, यादें और सोच को गीत और कविताओं में बदलने में मदद करना है।
चर्चा, लेखन अभ्यास, समूह से सुझाव लेना और प्रस्तुतियों के जरिए, प्रतिभागी इन चीज़ों को सीखेंगे और अनुभव करेंगे:
- गीत और कविता कैसे समाज में बात करने, सोचने और विरोध करने का तरीका बनती हैं
- गीत और कविता के मुख्य हिस्से – कल्पना (इमेज), लय (रिदम), धुन (मेलोडी), बनावट (स्ट्रक्चर), आवाज़ और भावना
- रोज़मर्रा के अनुभव, राजनीतिक बातें और यादों को रचनात्मक तरीके से व्यक्त करना
- सम्मान, न्याय, समानता, शांति और लोकतांत्रिक मूल्यों जैसे विषयों पर गीत और कविताएँ बनाना
- अपने बनाए गीत और कविताओं को समूह में सुनाना और प्रस्तुत करना
यह कार्यशाला प्रतिभागियों को साथ मिलकर काम करने, अपने विचार साझा करने, और समूह में गीत या कविता गाने/पढ़ने के लिए प्रोत्साहित करेगी। इससे सभी में समुदाय की भावना बनेगी।
वर्कशॉप के अंत तक, हर प्रतिभागी कम से कम एक नया गीत या कविता बनाएंगे । समूह मिलकर नए गीत या कविताएँ भी बना सकते हैं।
यह कार्यशाला हिंदी और अंग्रेज़ी दोनों भाषाओं में होगी।

- युवा और छात्र जो रचनात्मक लेखन और गीत लेखन में रुचि रखते हैं।
- सामाजिक कार्यकर्ता, शिक्षक और सांस्कृतिक कर्मी जो अपने काम में गीत और कविता का उपयोग करना चाहते हैं।
- लेखक, कवि, संगीतकार और कलाकार जो अपनी प्रैक्टिस को और गहरा करना चाहते हैं।
वे लोग जो सामाजिक आंदोलनों में सक्रिय हैं और अपनी बातों को रचनात्मक तरीके से व्यक्त करना चाहते हैं।
आवेदन करने वाले प्रतिभागियों में गीत या कविता लिखने में सच्ची रुचि होनी चाहिए। पूर्व औपचारिक प्रशिक्षण जरूरी नहीं है, लेकिन प्रतिभागियों को सक्रिय रूप से लिखने, साझा करने और सामूहिक सीखने की प्रक्रियाओं में भाग लेने की इच्छा होनी चाहिए।

यह कार्यशाला चारुल और विनय द्वारा संचालित की जाएगी, जो अपने जुनून से गायक और गीतकार हैं। उनके गीत उनके क्षेत्रीय अनुभवों से प्रेरित हैं, जिसमें किसान, पशुपालक, नमक बनाने वाले, जनजातीय समूह और विभिन्न सामाजिक आंदोलनों और कार्यकर्ताओं के साथ जुड़ाव शामिल है। वे विभिन्न सामाजिक संदर्भों में गीत लेखन कार्यशालाएँ आयोजित कर चुके हैं। उनके सरल लेकिन प्रभावशाली गीत और वास्तविक अनुभवों पर आधारित रचनाएँ उन्हें रचनात्मकता, सोच और सामाजिक प्रतिबद्धता को जोड़ने वाली शिक्षण शैली लाने में सक्षम बनाती हैं।

प्रतिभागी योगदान:
हमें उम्मीद है कि प्रतिभागी कार्यशाला के खर्चों के लिए ₹4,000/- का योगदान देंगे। इसमें सभी ऑन-साइट खर्च शामिल हैं, जैसे खाना, ठहरने का खर्च, और कार्यशाला में इस्तेमाल होने वाली सभी सामग्री। प्रतिभागियों की यात्रा का खर्च संगठन या प्रतिभागियों को खुद वहन करना होगा।
पैसे को अपनी आवेदन प्रक्रिया में बाधा न बनने दें। जरूरत के आधार पर फीस में छूट उपलब्ध है। हमारे पास सीमित संख्या में छात्रवृत्तियाँ हैं, इसलिए यदि आपको सच में जरूरत है तो फीस में छूट के लिए आवेदन करें। ध्यान रहे कि ऐसे भी लोग हो सकते हैं जिन्हें आपसे ज्यादा जरूरत हो। फीस में छूट हाशिए पर रहने वाले समूहों और गैर-फंडेड सामाजिक, राजनीतिक या छात्र आंदोलनों से जुड़े लोगों को दी जाएगी।
