Background

Is culture just art and architecture or is there more to it? How does it affect lives? Does it only exist in the past, to be observed from a distance? The irony is embedded in everything around us, as indigenous and folk forms of expression, like Warli Art, is being capitalized upon to be put on objects, like laptop covers and backpacks. Does this constitute culture? An entire nation gets busy in celebrating Karva Chauth while communal lynching, violence and deaths due to COVID mismanagement are camouflaged with celebrations using lamps, drums and thalis. Or is THIS the new normal for Culture?

Theatre has always been synonymous with culture- not just a form through performance, but something posing with its dual nature as both the mirror and the window. Just like any other journey, Culture moves and grows without structural frameworks. It is non-linear and chaotic in its extension.

Theatre of the Oppressed and the Culture of Dialogue

Theatre of the Oppressed (TOTO) is a praxis based on the political views of equality and democratic processes. Across the world, different movements, communities, and organizations have used it to initiate socio-cultural shifts.
Real, vital, and inclusionary dialogues are crucial aspects of enduring democracies, in the present and in the future too. TOTO, both as an approach and a technique, facilitates a shift in behavior and perception of individuals and collectives, enabling greater ownership and a hands-on approach to validate and support diverse dialogues. The Theatre of the Oppressed practice deeply respects the intellectual faculty of people and therefore has the potential to portray oppression and change the story. This form of theatre focuses not just on acting, but also on action. It deliberates on the reflection of realities and can be a rehearsal for future action. Jokering is the art of facilitating the TO experience. In rehearsals and workshops, the joker guides actors through games and exercises to investigate shared experiences of oppression. During performances the joker attempts to establish dialogue between the actors and spect-actors.

Objectives of this workshop

This workshop, which is the first and introductory level, is a 6-day workshop. It is an introduction to this amorphous framework and possible ways to implement TOTO in various fields. This workshop will focus on participatory process which offers people the possibility of identifying issues, articulating them in form of short plays and creating a structure in which an active dialogue between the actors and the spectators is instigated in order to try and change the story. The work that we will do during these 6 days will be experiential, with a summary and debrief of the techniques involved:

Space to connect within – understanding the connectedness between our body and the mind, and between human beings and everything in the world around them.
Analyse the intersectionality of oppressions and confront the hierarchies, violence and injustices within ourselves, and our collective lives through personal sharing and listening sessions.
Script forum and facilitation – principles of jokering and utilising these in different fields (e.g. facilitating large heterogeneous groups).
Develop trust in the power of the oppressed and finding means and tools to harness the same.
Build an effective culture of dialogue for sustainable change.

About the longer program

We are organizing an intensive TOTO program with three modules, which is designed as a funnel – spread across 10 months with exit possible at every level but entry possible only at the foundation level for freshers and at intermediary for those with experience. This entails both on-site workshops and action projects led by participants.

The three workshops will be placed within an interval of a few months and be spread over through 2026-27.
There will be three levels: Introduction > Immersion > Intense.
The resource persons, along with Sambhaavnaa Institute, want to create a space and community for individuals planning to engage in TOTO methods and practices in their respective fields. This could be any arena of social development and education among other spaces. The idea is to create Agents of Change who would become TOTO practitioners in the future for issues related to justice, equality and transformation.
The level of information, practice methods and intensity for the workshops would step up with every level of the workshop in this sequence: Foundation > Intermediary > Intense.
On completion of Foundation level, participants are expected to engage with TOTO in some way, in their respective professional spaces. This will be an imperative, to be able to apply for Intermediate level. The idea is to create a timeline where training and on-field practice run simultaneously.

The second round will take place later in the year, after a gap of 2-3 months. We would mostly like to have the same participants who participated in the first round of workshops. This workshop will involve an advanced training in TOTO and also involve work with the communities on the ground. In the third round, there shall be a training component at the Sambhaavnaa campus and a longer component of working with the communities. We shall together discuss the particularities of these workshops in detail when we meet during the first round. Details would be finalized collectively.

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for change-makers, social work practitioners, activists, people associated with people’s movements, theatre artists who work on aspects of social change and young artists exploring to develop techniques for social change.

This workshop is ideal for those who want to begin using Theatre for social change processes.

About the facilitators

Vanshika Pal is a “Theatre of the Oppressed” (TOTO) practitioner who works closely with schools, children, young adults, and women across different parts of India. Her theatre practice is deeply rooted in the education sector, where she uses liberal doses of art, visual aids and theatre as tools to support learning and to foster conversations around gender, identity, power, and everyday lived-experiences. Alongside her work in education and curriculum design, Vanshika has a strong interest in history and geography. She facilitates immersive heritage walks that bring together people from diverse backgrounds, using places, local histories, and neighbourhoods as starting points for reflection, and dialogue. She has honed her skills of oral-format story-telling in last 4 years having been associated with Delhi’s oldest heritage walk community DelhiByFoot Adventures. She regularly collaborates with prestigious Govt. and not-for-profit organisations such as SCERT, Jan Jagran Shakti Sangathan, and Sadbhavna Trust for various programs involving children and young adults. In her free time Vanshika enjoys travel solo, criss-crossing the cultural kaleidoscope that India is, which is an imperative for the constantly curious soul that she is, questioning everything she observes and absorbs around her. She brings this sense of curiosity into the spaces she creates, encouraging audience inquisitiveness, collective exploration and thus meaningful engagement with society we live in.
Zubair Idrisi has been a theater practitioner for more than fifteen years. His area of interest lies in working around the transformative power of theater in influencing social change. He specializes in theater-based training and facilitation of workshops at the individual, community, and organizational levels. He has extensive experience in project design and coordination with a focus on youth- and gender-oriented programs. He has designed and executed various social campaigns as well, each addressing a specific cause or an issue. His work with Pradan between 2017 and 2019 involved campaigns around gender-based violence, PDS distribution, and the right to vote. Zubair has worked with multiple non-government, government, and private organizations, along with students and teachers belonging to educational institutions as well. These include UNICEF, Greenpeace, JAGORI, Sangat, PCI, Teen Murti Bhawan, Nehru Learning Centre for Children and Youth, and the Government of India headquarters in New Delhi.
Mohammad Chappalwala is a TOTO practitioner who works for social change through civil society engagement. After being introduced to the TOTO practices, he has been actively applying them as an effective pedagogy tool in different workshops at Sambhaavnaa Institute.

Participant Contribution

We hope that participants will contribute an amount of Rs. 6,000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel of participants will have to be borne by the organisation/the participants.

क्या संस्कृति महज़ कला और स्थापत्य है या इससे ज्यादा भी कुछ है | यह जिंदगियों पर कैसे असर डालती है? क्या इसका अस्तित्व सिर्फ अतीत में था, जिसे दूर रहकर ही देखा जा सकता है? हमारे चारों तरफ जो कुछ है वह इस प्रकार की विडम्बना से घिरा हुआ है, देशज और लोकाभिव्यक्तियों जैसे आदिवासियों की चित्र शैली वारली का पूंजीवादकरण किया जा रहा है ताकि उसे एक उत्पाद अथवा वस्तु में बदला जा सके – जैसे कि हमारे लैपटॉप या पिट्ठू बैग| क्या यह संस्कृति है? सारा देश करवा चौथ मनाने में व्यस्त हो जाता है जबकि उसी समय लोगों को सडकों पर साम्प्रदायिक आधार पर मार डाला जाता है, कोविड से होने वाली मौतों को दिया जलाने और थाली बजाने या ढोल बजाने के उत्सवों से ढका जाता है| क्या संस्कृति के नाम पर इसे नया समान्य हाल बनाया जा रहा है?

रंगमंच हमेशा से संस्कृति का दूसरा नाम रहा है – महज़ अभिव्यक्ति की एक विधा के तौर पर नहीं, बल्कि अपने दोहरे गुण के साथ समाज के सामने एक आइना और एक खिड़की दोनों दिखाते हुए| अन्य किसी भी दुसरे सफर की तरह संस्कृति भी बिना किसी ढांचागत बंदिशों के आगे बढ़ती है और विकसित होती है| इसका अस्तित्व एक सीधी लकीर नहीं होता बल्कि यह मनचाहे अनगढ़ तरीके से विकसित होता है|

शोषितों का रंगमंच और बातचीत की संस्कृति

शोषितों का रंगमंच(TOTO) समानता और लोकतांत्रिक प्रक्रियाओं के राजनीतिक विचारों पर आधारित एक अभ्यास है। दुनिया भर में, विभिन्न आंदोलनों, समुदायों और संगठनों ने इसका उपयोग सामाजिक-सांस्कृतिक बदलाव शुरू करने के लिए किया है।
वास्तविक, महत्वपूर्ण और समावेशी संवाद, वर्तमान में और भविष्य में भी स्थायी लोकतंत्र के महत्वपूर्ण पहलू हैं। TOTO, एक दृष्टिकोण और एक तकनीक दोनों के रूप में, व्यक्तियों और सामूहिकों के व्यवहार और धारणा में बदलाव की सुविधा प्रदान करता है, विविध संवादों को मान्य और समर्थन करने के लिए अधिक स्वामित्व और व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण को सक्षम बनाता है। उत्पीड़ित प्रथा का रंगमंच लोगों के बौद्धिक संकाय का गहरा सम्मान करता है और इसलिए उत्पीड़न को चित्रित करने और कहानी को बदलने की क्षमता रखता है। थिएटर का यह रूप न केवल अभिनय पर बल्कि एक्शन पर भी केंद्रित है। यह वास्तविकताओं के प्रतिबिंब पर विचार-विमर्श करता है और भविष्य की कार्रवाई के लिए पूर्वाभ्यास हो सकता है। जोकरिंग TOTO अनुभव को सुविधाजनक बनाने की कला है। रिहर्सल और कार्यशालाओं में, जोकर उत्पीड़न के साझा अनुभवों की जांच करने के लिए खेल और अभ्यास के माध्यम से अभिनेताओं का मार्गदर्शन करता है। प्रदर्शन के दौरान जोकर अभिनेताओं और दर्शक-अभिनेताओं के बीच संवाद स्थापित करने का प्रयास करता है।

इस कार्यशाला के उद्देश्य

यह कार्यशाला प्रथम एवं परिचयात्मक स्तर की 6 दिवसीय कार्यशाला है। यह इस अनाकार ढांचे और विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में TOTO को लागू करने के संभावित तरीकों का परिचय है। यह कार्यशाला भागीदारी प्रक्रिया पर ध्यान केंद्रित करेगी जो लोगों को मुद्दों की पहचान करने, उन्हें लघु नाटकों के रूप में व्यक्त करने और एक ऐसी संरचना बनाने की संभावना प्रदान करती है जिसमें कहानी को बदलने और बदलने की कोशिश करने के लिए अभिनेताओं और दर्शकों के बीच एक सक्रिय संवाद शुरू किया जाता है। इन 6 दिनों के दौरान हम जो कार्य करेंगे, वह अनुभवात्मक होगा, जिसमें शामिल तकनीकों का सारांश और संक्षिप्त विवरण होगा:

आन्तरिकता से जोड़ने का स्थान – हमारे शरीर और मन के बीच, और मनुष्यों और उनके आसपास की दुनिया की हर चीज के बीच जुड़ाव को समझना।
व्यक्तिगत साझाकरण और सुनने के सत्रों के माध्यम से उत्पीड़न की परस्परता का विश्लेषण करें और अपने भीतर और हमारे सामूहिक जीवन के पदानुक्रम, हिंसा और अन्याय का सामना करें।
स्क्रिप्ट फोरम और सुविधा – मजाक करने और विभिन्न क्षेत्रों में इनका उपयोग करने के सिद्धांत (उदाहरण के लिए बड़े विषम समूहों की सुविधा)।
उत्पीड़ितों की शक्ति में विश्वास विकसित करना और उसका उपयोग करने के साधन और उपकरण खोजना।

लंबे कार्यक्रम के बारे में

हम तीन मॉड्यूल के साथ एक गहन TOTO कार्यक्रम का आयोजन कर रहे हैं, जिसे एक फ़नल के रूप में डिज़ाइन किया गया है – यह 10 महीनों में फैला हुआ है जिसमें हर स्तर पर निकास संभव है लेकिन नए लोगों के लिए केवल बुनियादी स्तर पर और अनुभव वाले लोगों के लिए मध्यस्थ स्तर पर प्रवेश संभव है। इसमें प्रतिभागियों के नेतृत्व में ऑन-साइट कार्यशालाएं और कार्य परियोजनाएं दोनों शामिल हैं।

तीन कार्यशालाओं को कुछ महीनों के अंतराल के भीतर रखा जाएगा और 2026-27 तक फैलाया जाएगा।
तीन स्तर होंगे: बुनियादी> मध्यस्थ> गहन।
विशेषज्ञ (जया अय्यर और जुबैर इदरीसी), संभावना संस्थान के साथ, अपने संबंधित क्षेत्रों में TOTO विधियों और प्रथाओं में संलग्न होने की योजना बनाने वाले व्यक्तियों के लिए एक स्थान और समुदाय बनाना चाहते हैं। यह अन्य स्थानों के बीच सामाजिक विकास और शिक्षा का कोई भी क्षेत्र हो सकता है। विचार परिवर्तन के एजेंट बनाने का है जो भविष्य में न्याय, समानता और परिवर्तन से संबंधित मुद्दों के लिए TOTO व्यवसायी बनेंगे।
कार्यशालाओं के लिए सूचना का स्तर, अभ्यास के तरीके और तीव्रता इस क्रम में कार्यशाला के हर स्तर के साथ बढ़ेंगे: फाउंडेशन> इंटरमीडियरी> इंटेंस (बुनियादी> मध्यस्थ> गहन)।
फाउंडेशन स्तर के पूरा होने पर, प्रतिभागियों से अपेक्षा की जाती है कि वे अपने-अपने पेशेवर स्थानों में किसी न किसी तरह से TOTO के साथ जुड़ें। मध्यस्थ स्तर के लिए आवेदन करने में सक्षम होने के लिए यह अनिवार्य होगा। विचार एक समय रेखा तैयार करना है, जहां प्रशिक्षण और ऑन-फील्ड अभ्यास एक साथ चलते हैं।

दूसरा दौर 2-3 महीने के अंतराल के बाद वर्ष में बाद में होगा। हम ज्यादातर वही प्रतिभागियों को रखना चाहेंगे जिन्होंने कार्यशालाओं के पहले दौर में भाग लिया था। इस कार्यशाला में TOTO में एक उन्नत प्रशिक्षण शामिल होगा और इसमें जमीन पर समुदायों के साथ काम भी शामिल होगा। तीसरे दौर में, संभावना परिसर में एक प्रशिक्षण घटक और समुदायों के साथ काम करने का एक लंबा घटक होगा। जब हम पहले दौर के दौरान मिलेंगे तो हम इन कार्यशालाओं की विशिष्टताओं पर विस्तार से चर्चा करेंगे। विवरण को सामूहिक रूप से अंतिम रूप दिया जाएगा।

वंशिका पाल “थिएटर ऑफ़ द ऑप्रेस्ड” (TOTO) की प्रैक्टिशनर हैं, जो भारत के अलग-अलग हिस्सों में स्कूलों, बच्चों, युवाओं और महिलाओं के साथ मिलकर काम करती हैं। उनकी थिएटर प्रैक्टिस शिक्षा के क्षेत्र से गहराई से जुड़ी है, जहाँ वे सीखने में मदद करने और लिंग, पहचान, सत्ता और रोज़मर्रा के अनुभवों जैसे विषयों पर बातचीत को बढ़ावा देने के लिए कला, विज़ुअल एड्स और थिएटर का भरपूर इस्तेमाल करती हैं। शिक्षा और करिकुलम डिज़ाइन के क्षेत्र में अपने काम के साथ-साथ, वंशिका की इतिहास और भूगोल में भी गहरी दिलचस्पी है। वे ऐसे हेरिटेज वॉक आयोजित करती हैं जिनमें अलग-अलग पृष्ठभूमि के लोग एक साथ आते हैं; इन वॉक में वे जगहों, स्थानीय इतिहास और आस-पड़ोस को सोचने-विचारने और बातचीत शुरू करने के लिए शुरुआती बिंदुओं के तौर पर इस्तेमाल करती हैं।
पिछले 4 सालों में, दिल्ली की सबसे पुरानी हेरिटेज वॉक कम्युनिटी ‘DelhiByFoot Adventures’ से जुड़कर उन्होंने मौखिक रूप से कहानियाँ सुनाने के अपने कौशल को और भी निखारा है। वे बच्चों और युवाओं से जुड़े अलग-अलग कार्यक्रमों के लिए SCERT, जन जागरण शक्ति संगठन और सद्भावना ट्रस्ट जैसे प्रतिष्ठित सरकारी और गैर-लाभकारी संगठनों के साथ नियमित रूप से मिलकर काम करती हैं। अपने खाली समय में, वंशिका अकेले घूमना पसंद करती हैं और भारत की विविध संस्कृतियों को करीब से देखती हैं; एक हमेशा जिज्ञासु रहने वाली इंसान होने के नाते, उनके लिए यह बहुत ज़रूरी है कि वे अपने आस-पास जो कुछ भी देखती और सीखती हैं, उस पर सवाल उठाएँ।
वे अपनी इसी जिज्ञासा को उन जगहों पर भी ले जाती हैं जहाँ वे काम करती हैं, और दर्शकों को भी जिज्ञासु बनने, मिलकर चीज़ों को समझने और इस तरह, जिस समाज में हम रहते हैं, उसके साथ सार्थक रूप से जुड़ने के लिए प्रेरित करती हैं।
ज़ुबैर इदरीसी पिछले पंद्रह साल से ज़्यादा समय से थिएटर के क्षेत्र में सक्रिय हैं। उनकी खास दिलचस्पी थिएटर की उस बदलाव लाने वाली ताकत पर काम करने में है, जो सामाजिक बदलाव लाने में अहम भूमिका निभाती है। उन्हें व्यक्तिगत, सामुदायिक और संस्थागत स्तर पर थिएटर-आधारित ट्रेनिंग देने और वर्कशॉप आयोजित करने में महारत हासिल है। उन्हें प्रोजेक्ट डिज़ाइन और समन्वय का भी व्यापक अनुभव है, जिसमें उनका विशेष ध्यान युवाओं और लैंगिक समानता पर आधारित कार्यक्रमों पर रहता है। उन्होंने कई सामाजिक अभियान भी डिज़ाइन किए हैं और उन्हें सफलतापूर्वक लागू किया है; इनमें से हर अभियान किसी न किसी खास मुद्दे या समस्या पर केंद्रित रहा है। 2017 से 2019 के बीच ‘प्रदान’ (Pradan) के साथ काम करते हुए, उन्होंने लैंगिक हिंसा, PDS वितरण और मतदान के अधिकार जैसे विषयों पर आधारित कई अभियान चलाए। ज़ुबैर ने कई गैर-सरकारी, सरकारी और निजी संगठनों के साथ-साथ विभिन्न शिक्षण संस्थानों के छात्रों और शिक्षकों के साथ भी काम किया है। इनमें UNICEF, Greenpeace, JAGORI, Sangat, PCI, तीन मूर्ति भवन, नेहरू लर्निंग सेंटर फॉर चिल्ड्रन एंड यूथ और नई दिल्ली स्थित भारत सरकार के मुख्यालय जैसे संस्थान शामिल हैं।
मोहम्‍मद चप्‍पलवाला: मोहम्‍मद एक TOTO अभ्यासक हैं, जो सामाजिक बदलाव के लिए सिविल सोसायटी की भागीदारी के माध्यम से काम करते हैं। TOTO की पद्धतियों से परिचय के बाद, वे इन तकनीकों का उपयोग विभिन्न कार्यशालाओं में एक प्रभावी शिक्षाशास्त्र के रूप में सक्रिय रूप से कर रहे हैं, विशेष रूप से संभावना संस्थान में।

प्रतिभागियों के लिए योगदान : छह दिन की इस कार्यशाला के लिए प्रत्येक प्रतिभागी के लिए योगदान राशी 6000/- रूपये होगी| हम एक संगठन से दो अथवा अधिक प्रतिभागियों को आवेदन करने के लिए प्रेरित करेंगे| प्रतिभागियों को अपना मार्ग व्यय स्वयं देना होगा|
