Are you passionate to work in an area that fosters change (for the better)? Do you wish to capture the socio-cultural, environmental, and political stories of our times that challenge the current system?
Background/ Rationale
Writing about the world around us is not just an act of documentation but also a harbinger of inner and outer change. It challenges the existing power equations and strengthens the voice of the unheard while also making the writers aware of their own biases and privileges. Writing is one of the oldest methods of revolution in the world. It is an important tool to spread awareness and assert freedom of expression. Through their work, journalists are simply exercising every citizen’s right to free speech.
You might have come across many stories which you feel the world should know but may not have written them for lack of skill or confidence.
About the Workshop
This workshop will guide you in finding your voice as a writer, equipping you with a skill in storytelling that’s effective and humane. Through a series of exhaustive discussions, writing assignments, activities, interaction with experienced people in the social sector, and field visits this seven-day skill-based course will help you build an expression. We will help you share the stories you care for be it personal, political, or social. This workshop will include sessions on coherent writing, interviewing, photography, data mining, fact-checking, the use of satellite maps, infographics, and short audio-visual content in storytelling.
The sessions will be interspersed with creative exercises in nurturing imagination, empathy, and self-appraisal. The residential structure of the workshop will mean that the participants can access the facilitators for feedback and guidance freely after the class hours for the duration of the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, the participants will be ready to conceive story ideas, identify research avenues for them, analyze topics, conduct interviews, connect with people and surroundings, and produce and publish in-depth written and visual content. They will also be guided on how to pitch the stories to publishers and work with editors during the post-writing process.
Who is the workshop for: This workshop is ideal for aspiring writers and also for those who want to upgrade their skills in storytelling and multimedia use. Besides journalism, the learnings can be used in analyzing social issues in your field of work, building advocacy campaigns, in-house group or interpersonal communications, and other mass communication material.
Facilitators Bio:
Ravleen Kaur (She/Her)-Ravleen Kaur is an independent journalist working on environmental and rural issues. She started working with the Delhi edition of The Indian Express in 2005 and then joined Down to Earth magazine, India’s most trusted environmental magazine. Ravleen also reported for the news service division of All India Radio and worked as a consulting editor with India Water Portal. She has reported from 15 states and has delved into a variety of subjects ranging from health, agriculture, and environmental issues to writing on food and travel. Manu Moudgil (He/They) – Manu is an independent journalist with a focus on the environment, social justice, and governance. He has traveled extensively and reported from 10 of the 15 major agro-climatic zones in India while also undertaking research work and workshops on environmental issues, the right to information, and multimedia tools. Contribution towards Program Costs: We hope that participants would contribute an amount of Rs. 7000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Need-based partial waivers are available; we have a very limited number of partial waivers, so, please apply for a waiver only if you really need it. Please do remember that there may be others who need it more than you.
Language: English and Hindi. Participants are welcome from any language background as we would like to encourage writing in local languages. However, resource persons can read and understand English, Hindi and Punjabi.

अपने आस-पास की दुनिया के बारे में लिखना किसी घटना या विचार को संग्रहित करने के साथ साथ आंतरिक और बाहरी परिवर्तन का सूचक भी है | लेखन दुनिया में क्रांति के सबसे पुराने तरीकों में से एक है। यह हाशिए पर धकेले गए लोगों की आवाज़ को मजबूत करते हुए मौजूदा सत्ता की नीतियों को चुनौती देता है और साथ ही लेखकों को अपने पूर्वाग्रहों और विशेषाधिकारों से भी अवगत कराता है। अपने काम के ज़रिए, पत्रकार हर नागरिक की अभिव्यक्ति की आज़ादी के अधिकार को बुलंद करते हैं ।
आपने भी अपने जीवन में कई अनुभव किए होंगे जिनके बारे में आप और लोगों को बताना चाहते होंगे, लेकिन कौशल, अवसर या आत्मविश्वास की कमी के कारण आपने उन्हें लिखने का प्रयास नहीं किया ।
कार्यशाला के बारे में
इस कार्यशाला में स्पष्ट लेखन, साक्षात्कार, फोटोग्राफी, डेटा संकलन, तथ्य-जांच, सैटेलाइट मैपिंग का उपयोग, इन्फोग्राफिक्स और शॉर्ट ऑडियो-विज़ुअल सामग्री पर सत्र शामिल होंगे।
यह कार्यशाला आपको एक लेखक के रूप में अपनी शैली खोजने में मदद करेगी तथा आपके प्रभावी और मानवीय कहानी कहने के कौशल को और बढ़ावा देगी । विस्तृत चर्चाओं, लेखन अभ्यासों, सामाजिक क्षेत्र के अनुभवी लोगों के साथ बातचीत और फ़ील्ड वर्क के माध्यम से यह सात दिवसीय पाठ्यक्रम आपको उन कहानियों को साँझा करने में मदद करेगा जिनकी आप परवाह करते हैं, चाहे वे व्यक्तिगत हों, राजनीतिक हों या सामाजिक ।
सत्रों में कल्पना, समवेदना और आत्म-मूल्यांकन को बढ़ावा देने के रचनात्मक अभ्यास भी शामिल होंगे।कार्यशाला की आवासीय संरचना इसलिए की गयी है ताकि प्रतिभागी सत्रों के बाद भी फीडबैक और मार्गदर्शन प्राप्त कर सकें । कार्यशाला के अंत में, आप लेख के लिए नए विचारों को खोजने, उन पर शोध करने, विषयों का विश्लेषण करने, साक्षात्कार करने, लोगों और परिवेश से जुड़ने और गहन लिखित और विज़ुअल सामग्री का उत्पादन और प्रकाशन करने के लिए तैयार होंगे। आपको यह भी बताया जाएगा कि प्रकाशन के लिए कहाँ और किस से सम्पर्क करें तथा लेखन के बाद की प्रक्रिया के दौरान संपादकों के साथ कैसे काम किया जाए।
