‘Khulti Partein’– MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY WORKSHOP
14th to 18th November 2026
Background
The 2024 WEF Global Risk Report, which ranks countries at risk due to disinformation and misinformation, puts India at #1. Our information system has serious problems. It is often used in harmful ways, such as spreading false information, online scams, hate speech, cyberbullying, and stealing personal data. The youth in India, at a very impressionable age, are being exposed to false or misleading information online. This corrupted information spreads hate and divides communities. It often creates an “us vs. them” mindset, especially along religious and other fault lines in society. Many believe and share such content without checking facts, leading to more confusion and aggression. Critical thinking and empathy are the needs of the hour to counter this proliferation of misinformation and hate.
About the Workshop
This five-day Media and Information Literacy (MIL) workshop is designed for members of civil society organizations who work closely with communities. In today’s world, people receive information from many sources—TV, newspapers, social media, and more. However, not all of this information is true, fair, or complete. This workshop will help participants understand how the media and information system work—how messages are created, shared, and received, and what impact they have on people and society.
The workshop will focus on five major themes.
- How we perceive information: Participants will learn how to tell the difference between fact and opinion and how to recognize misinformation, disinformation, and propaganda.
- What shapes our perception of information: How the media uses stereotypes and biases, and how these shape public opinion.
- How the information ecosystem manipulates us: We will explore how media content is used to influence people’s thinking, often without them knowing.
- The business of media and social media: How media companies make money and how social media changes communication, will also be discussed.
- How we counter it with knowledge, competencies, and skills.
Even if participants cannot change the media system immediately, understanding it is the first step. When civil society members understand how media (including social media) works, they can help their communities think critically, avoid being misled, and make better decisions. The workshop also focuses on building empathy and being responsible online.
Workshop Objectives
- Understand the Media Ecosystem: Help participants learn how traditional and digital media work, and how media messages are produced, shaped, and consumed.
- Identify Misinformation and Bias: Teach skills to recognize false or misleading information, hidden messages, and biased reporting in both mainstream and social media.
- Analyze Media Narratives: Understand how stories are framed to influence public opinion, how consent is manufactured, and how stereotypes are used in media messaging.
- Develop Critical Thinking and Fact-Checking Skills: Learn how to check facts, question sources, and evaluate the reliability of information.
- Explore Media Business and News Values: Understand the role of profit, audience targeting, and media ownership in shaping the news and content we see.
- Promote Empathy and Digital Citizenship: Encourage respectful online behavior, recognize the impact of cyberbullying, and raise awareness of cybercrimes and digital safety.
- Build Communication and Advocacy Skills: Empower participants with the knowledge and confidence to speak to their communities about media influence, and support them in becoming responsible, informed citizens.
The outcome
- Enable participants to understand how, as a society, we are interacting with the information ecosystem.
- Understand why we are falling prey to certain narratives.
- How to get the best out of this ecosystem, given its flaws.
