Songs of Resistance 3.0

Songs, Poetry, and Slogans have played a crucial role in resistance spaces, social movements, and each one’s lives. We are familiar with many songs and poems that have been inspired by andolans such as Narmada Bachao Andolan, Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sanghatan, Chengara Land Struggle, Feminist groups, and many other mass organisations. These songs, poems, and slogans imbibe the politics and ethos of the struggle. Collectives such as India People’s Theatre Association, Kerala People’s Art Club, Kabir Kala Manch, Kabir Yatra, Relaaa, Dynamic Action, Yalgaar, Casteless Collective, and artists like Gaddar, Shital Sathe, Sambhaji Bhagat, TM Krishna, Amir Aziz, and many more have born out of similar struggles or have been an integral part of such resistance spaces.
These cultural activists often symbolize the struggles and act as a force of ‘social and political change’. In the last few years, songs from these spaces have also been used by fundamentalist forces to spread hatred and bigotry. But we have also witnessed several independent compositions that upheld love, harmony, justice, constitutional values, and human rights through art, especially music.
The ‘Songs of Resistance 3.0’ workshop invites young people who are interested in learning the process of songwriting, musical composition and performance of music of resistance. It is a four-day workshop with singers, poets, performers, and cultural activists who have used music as a means to democratise social movement spaces.
Objectives:
- Understand the process of songwriting, musical composition, production, and performance of music in social movement spaces.
- Understanding tools and techniques of Voice Projection, Pitch, modulation, Vocal Exercise, Body & rhythm
- Learn and experiment with singers, performers, and cultural activists who have used music as a means to democratise protest spaces.
- Watch films and music videos that show the connection of songs and music with nature, everyday lives, and resistance.
- Initiate conversations on different kinds of music of resistance by listening, singing, and composing songs on contemporary issues of discrimination and injustice.
Who can apply?:
Those who can compose poetry/song, sing, and play one or more instruments. We are currently not in a position to include you if you do not have one of these skills, but are merely an enthusiast. Kindly note that since this is a song-making intensive workshop, we hope to record two songs that emerge from the workshop. If you have some experience in this arena, please feel free to fill in the form as well.
Some of the performances of our participants from the last two years have been uploaded here, and we hope we can do the same this year.

Resource People:
Sofia Ashraf: A feminist singer, rapper, and writer, Sofia has written several songs on issues of corporate accountability and smashing patriarchy, among others. Her song ‘Kodaikanal Won’t’ (by Vettiver Collective) addresses the mercury poisoning by a thermometer factory owned by Unilever that resulted in the multinational company compensating more than 500 employees.
Dhammrakshit Randive: Dhammrakshit Randive, better known as Dhamma, is a cultural activist, singer, musician, and actor, hailing from Satara, Maharashtra. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Kolhapur University, a diploma in Performing Folk Art from Lok Kala Academy, Mumbai, and a Masters degree in Theatre Arts from Mumbai University. Dhamma is one of the founder members of Yalgaar Sanskrutik Manch & Nirmik Cultural Center, which is inspired by Babasaheb Ambedkar’s vision of cultural reform preceding political change. He is currently working as a theater artist, music composer, and trainer with different institutions and organisations in India.
Sabika Abbas: Sabika is a poet, human rights organiser, lawyer, qissa-goh, and educator whose work explores the intersections of art, justice, grief, and collective memory. She is the founder of Sar-e-Rahguzar: Poetry on the Streets and Bab-e-Ilm, a school support and bridge community centre. Sabika currently co-leads movement and campaigns work at Noor, and has previously worked with Change.org and the Fearless Collective. She is the former Editor of South Asian Avant Garde magazine
Sumangala Damodaran (Online): Sumangala Damodaran is an academician and musician who is presently Director, Gender and Economics with the International Development Economics Associates (IDEAs). Her archiving and documentation of the musical tradition of the Indian People’s Theatre Association from the 1940s and 1950s has resulted in a book titled “The Radical Impulse: Music in the Tradition of the IPTA” and an album titled ‘Songs of Protest’. She has also taught courses on Music and Society, conducted workshops around how to use music as a lens to understand society, and done lecture-demonstrations on music relating to social movements, migration, and gender.
Rahul Ram (Online): With a PhD in environmental toxicology, Rahul has been active in connecting music with environmental issues since his engagement with the Narmada Bachao Andolan. As part of the band Indian Ocean, Rahul has performed over 1000 concerts across in addition to composing music for several documentaries and Bollywood films. His ‘Aisi Taisi Democracy’ is a popular satirical take on the current political situation in the country.
The workshop is curated and facilitated by Aswathy Senan. Aswathy is a researcher, translator and writer based out of Delhi. Works on issues of gender, resistance and social justice and designing pedagogical methods to understand them. She has obtained her PhD from the University of Delhi. She has worked with various research and media groups and is interested in documenting and facilitating art in resistance and social movement spaces.
Participant Contribution
We hope that participants will contribute an amount of Rs. 4,000/- towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all on-site workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel of participants will have to be borne by the organisation/the participants.
Do not let money be an impediment to your application. Need-based fee waivers are available. We have a limited number of scholarships, so please apply for a fee waiver if you really need it. Do remember that there may be others who need it more than you. A fee waiver will be offered to people from marginalized groups and non-funded social, political, or student movements.

प्रतिरोध के गीत 3.0 कार्यशाला

गाने, कविताएँ और नारे सामाजिक आंदोलनों में बहुत जरूरी भूमिका निभाते हैं। हम ऐसे कई गानों और कविताओं से परिचित हैं जो नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन, मज़दूर किसान शक्ति संगठन, चेंगरा भूमि संघर्ष, नारीवादी समूहों और अन्य जन आंदोलनों से प्रेरित होकर बने हैं। ये गाने, कविताएँ और नारे उस संघर्ष की राजनीति और भावना को अपने अंदर समेटे हुए हैं।
इंडियन पीपल्स थिएटर असोसिएशन, केरल पीपल्स आर्ट क्लब, कबीर कला मंच, कबीर यात्रा, रेला, डायनामिक एक्शन, यलगार, कास्टलेस कलेक्टिव जैसे समूह और गदर , शीतल साठे, संभाजी भगत, टीएम कृष्णा, आमिर अज़ीज़ जैसे कलाकार भी ऐसे ही आंदोलनों से जन्मे हैं या इन प्रतिरोध की जगहों का एक अहम हिस्सा रहे हैं।
पिछले कुछ सालों में, इन जगहों के गानों का गलत इस्तेमाल भी हुआ है, जहां कुछ कट्टरपंथी ताकतों ने नफ़रत और भेदभाव फैलाने के लिए इन गानों का प्रयोग किया। लेकिन हमें कई ऐसे स्वतंत्र गाने भी मिले हैं, जो प्यार, एकता, न्याय, संवैधानिक मूल्यों और मानव अधिकारों को कला, खासकर संगीत के ज़रिए बढ़ावा देते हैं।
प्रतिरोध के गीत 3.0’ कार्यशाला, उन युवाओं को आमंत्रित करती है जो गीत लेखन, संगीत की रचना और प्रतिरोध के संगीत के प्रदर्शन की प्रक्रिया को सीखने में रुचि रखते हैं। यह चार दिन की कार्यशाला है जिसमें गायक, कवि, परफ़ॉर्मर और सांस्कृतिक कार्यकर्ता शामिल होंगे, जिन्होंने संगीत को सामाजिक आंदोलनों की जगहों को लोकतांत्रिक बनाने के एक माध्यम के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया है।
उद्देश्य:
- सामाजिक आंदोलनों से जुड़े क्षेत्रों में गीत लिखने, संगीत बनाने, और प्रस्तुत करने की प्रक्रिया को समझना।
- ऐसे कलाकारों के साथ मिलकर काम करना, जिन्होंने संगीत को एक ऐसा ज़रिया बनाया जिससे हर कोई विरोध की आवाज़ का हिस्सा बन सके।
- ऐसी फ़िल्में और संगीत वीडियो देखना जो प्रकृति, हमारी ज़िन्दगी और प्रतिरोध से सम्बंधित है ।
- भेदभाव और अन्याय के मुद्दों पर गाने सुनकर, गाकर और रचकर, प्रतिरोध के अलग-अलग तरह के संगीत पर बातचीत की शुरुआत करना।
- गीत लेखन और निर्माण की प्रक्रिया से परिचय कराना और यह कैसे किया जाता है, इस पर तकनीकी प्रशिक्षण सीखना
कौन आवेदन कर सकता है?:
वे लोग जो कविता या गाना रच सकते हैं, गा सकते हैं, और कोई भी संगीत उपकरण बजा सकते हैं। अगर आपकी इन सब चीजों में रुचि तो है लेकिन अनुभव नहीं है, तो इस समय हम आपको कार्यशाला में शामिल करने में असमर्थ हैं। कृपया समझें कि यह एक गाना बनाने वाली इंटेंसिव (गहन) कार्यशाला है, जिसमें हम कार्यशाला से निकलने वाले दो गानों को रिकॉर्ड करने की उम्मीद करते हैं। यदि इस क्षेत्र में आपका कुछ अनुभव है, तो कृपया निःसंकोच फॉर्म भरें।

संसाधन व्यक्ति:-
सोफिया अशराफ: वह एक नारीवादी गायिका, रैपर और लेखिका हैं। सोफिया ने कॉर्पोरेट जिम्मेदारी और पितृसत्ता को तोड़ने जैसे मुद्दों पर कई गाने लिखे हैं। उनका गाना ‘Kodaikanal Won’t’ (Vettiver Collective द्वारा) यूनिलीवर की थर्मामीटर फैक्ट्री की वजह से मर्क्युरी ज़हर फैलने की घटना पर आधारित है, जिसके कारण कंपनी ने 500 से ज्यादा कर्मचारियों को मुआवजा भी दिया।
धम्मरक्षित रांदिवे: धम्मरक्षित रांदिवे, जिन्हें लोग धम्मा के नाम से जानते हैं, महाराष्ट्र के सतारा से हैं। वह एक सांस्कृतिक कार्यकर्ता, गायक, संगीतकार और अभिनेता हैं। उनका काम समाज में बराबरी, न्याय और जागरूकता फैलाने के लिए है। धम्मा ने कोल्हापुर यूनिवर्सिटी से सोशल वर्क में पढ़ाई की है। उन्होंने मुंबई की लोक कला अकादमी से लोक कला (फोक आर्ट) में डिप्लोमा और मुंबई यूनिवर्सिटी से थिएटर आर्ट्स में मास्टर्स की पढ़ाई की है। वह यलगार सांस्कृतिक मंच और निर्मिक सांस्कृतिक केंद्र के शुरूआती (संस्थापक) सदस्य हैं। ये मंच डॉ. बाबासाहेब अंबेडकर के उस विचार से प्रेरित हैं कि राजनीतिक बदलाव से पहले सांस्कृतिक बदलाव ज़रूरी है। आज धम्मा एक थिएटर आर्टिस्ट, संगीत बनाने वाले और सीखाने वाले (ट्रेनर) के रूप में देश के अलग-अलग संगठनों और संस्थानों के साथ काम कर रहे हैं।
सुमंगला दामोदरन (ऑनलाइन): सुमंगला दामोदरन एक शिक्षाविद और संगीतकार हैं। वह अभी इंटरनेशनल डेवलपमेंट इकोनॉमिक्स एसोसिएट्स (IDEAs) में जेंडर और इकोनॉमी की निदेशक हैं। उन्होंने 1940 और 1950 के दशक के इंडियन पीपल्स थिएटर एसोसिएशन के संगीत को जमा किया और उसका दस्तावेजीकरण किया है। इस काम से उनकी एक किताब बनी है जिसका नाम है “The Radical Impulse: Music in the Tradition of the IPTA” और एक एल्बम भी है जिसका नाम है ‘Songs of Protest’। उन्होंने संगीत और समाज पर पढ़ाई भी की है, और बताया है कि कैसे संगीत के जरिए हम समाज को समझ सकते हैं। इसके अलावा उन्होंने सामाजिक आंदोलनों, प्रवासन और लिंग से जुड़े संगीत पर लेक्चर और प्रदर्शन भी किए हैं।
राहुल राम (TBC): राहुल के पास पर्यावरण विष विज्ञान में पीएचडी है। नर्मदा बचाओ आंदोलन से जुड़ने के बाद से वह संगीत के जरिए पर्यावरण और सामाजिक मुद्दों को सामने लाने में सक्रिय रहे हैं। इंडियन ओशन बैंड के सदस्य के रूप में, राहुल ने देश-विदेश में 1000 से ज्यादा कॉन्सर्ट दिए हैं। इसके अलावा, उन्होंने कई डॉक्यूमेंट्री और बॉलीवुड फिल्मों के लिए संगीत भी बनाया है। उनका गीत ‘ऐसी तैसी डेमोक्रेसी’ आज के राजनीतिक हालात पर एक तेज़ और दिलचस्प व्यंग्य है, जो लोगों के दिलों को छूता है।
सबीका अब्बास: सबीका एक कवयित्री, मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता, वकील, कहानी सुनाने वाली और शिक्षिका हैं। उनका काम कला, इंसाफ, दुख और लोगों की यादों को एक साथ लाने का काम करता है। वह “सर-ए-राहगुज़र: Poetry on the Streets” और “बाब-ए-इल्म” (एक स्कूल मदद और समुदाय का केंद्र) की संस्थापक हैं। सबीका इस समय ‘नूर’ संस्था में आंदोलनों और अभियानों से जुड़ा काम संभाल रही हैं। इससे पहले उन्होंने Change.org और Fearless Collective के साथ काम किया है। वह South Asian Avant Garde मैगज़ीन की पूर्व संपादक भी रही हैं।
यह कार्यशाला अस्वथी सेनान संचालित कर रही हैं। अस्वथी दिल्ली की शोधकर्ता, अनुवादक और लेखिका हैं। वह जेंडर, प्रतिरोध और सामाजिक न्याय जैसे मुद्दों पर काम करती हैं। उन्होंने दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय से पीएचडी की है। अस्वथी दिल्ली के The Media Collective और The Research Collective से जुड़ी हैं। अभी वह Break Free From Plastic आंदोलन के साथ काम कर रही हैं!
कार्यक्रम के लिये शुल्कः
चार दिन के कार्यक्रम में भोजन और आवास का शुल्क 4000 रूपए है।
