A Workshop on Understanding the Constitution for Social Change
11–15 June, 2025
Background
This workshop emerges from the need to equip people interested in social development, nation-building, and social justice, and anyone who seeks to engage with a deeper understanding of the Indian constitution. Given the evolving political and social landscape in India, constitutional knowledge is essential for effectively navigating issues of rights, governance, and equality. The Constitution is not just a legal document but a transformative tool that shapes India’s democracy and societal structure. Through this workshop, participants will learn how the Constitution can address contemporary challenges like inequality, discrimination, citizenship, and the role of institutions in upholding democracy.
What is the workshop about?
The workshop aims to explore the following key questions:
- How did the Indian Constitution come into being, and what historical forces shaped it?
- What lies at the heart of the Constitution as its basic principles and values in the Preamble?
- What role do constitutional institutions (the Election Commission, the judiciary) play in ensuring democratic governance?
- As commonly understood in the mainstream, is societal tradition and constitutional rights and values mutually opposing, or can they work together?
- How is the Constitution a blueprint for transforming India into a democratic, egalitarian society?
- How have rights-based movements used the Constitution for advocacy?
- What are the rights of citizens, and how can the Constitution and its principles be applied to present-day issues of equality, justice, anti-discrimination, and citizenship?
- What is the connection between the Constitution, constitutional values, and the development sector?
- Critical Engagement: Encouraging participants to think critically about how constitutional principles like secularism, fraternity, and equality apply to their work in the social sector.
Methodology
Interactive Learning: Participants will actively engage with constitutional principles through
- Case Law Discussions: Participants will be presented with facts of real cases to discuss in groups, followed by a deeper dive into constitutional values, rights, the law, and court rulings.
- Group Work with Varied Scenarios: Groups will tackle different but related constitutional scenarios, encouraging comparison and collaborative analysis.
- Theatre of the Oppressed
- Creative Engagement: Using videos, poetry, and storytelling to make the Constitution accessible and relatable.
Language: Sessions will primarily be conducted in Hindi and English. Wherever necessary, bilingual discussions (English and Hindi) will be encouraged to ensure clarity and inclusivity.
Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is designed for:
- Young professionals working in the social sector, especially those engaged in rights-based activism, social justice movements, or community development.
- Youth who have exposure to a basic understanding of Indian governance but a desire to deepen their engagement with constitutional law, institutions, and the democratic process.
- Individuals or college going youth who are passionate about social justice and wish to understand how the Indian Constitution can be leveraged to advocate for change.
About the Facilitator(s)
Individuals with expertise in constitutional law, social justice, and governance will facilitate the workshop. Facilitators will have a background in legal advocacy, civic engagement, and working with marginalized communities. - Poorna Ravishankar – Cofounder, Alternative Law Forum.
Contribution to the Program: We request participants to contribute an amount of Rs. 5,000 towards workshop expenses, inclusive of all onsite workshop costs: boarding, lodging, and all the materials used in the workshop. Travel will be borne by the participants. Need-based fee waivers are available. Do remember that there may be others who need it more than you. The fee waivers will be offered to people from marginalized groups and non-funded social, political, or student movements.

कार्यशाला किस बारे में है?
यह कार्यशाला निम्नलिखित प्रमुख प्रश्नों की खोज करने का लक्ष्य रखती है:
- भारतीय संविधान का निर्माण कैसे हुआ, और किन ऐतिहासिक शक्तियों ने इसे आकार दिया?
- संविधान के मूल सिद्धांत और मूल्यों के रूप में क्या है जो प्रस्तावना में निहित हैं?
- लोकतांत्रिक शासन को सुनिश्चित करने में संवैधानिकक संस्थाओं (चुनाव आयोग, न्यायपालिका) की क्या भूमिका है?
- संविधान कैसे भारत को एक लोकतांत्रिक, समानतावादी समाज में बदलने का खाका है?
- अधिकार आधारित आंदोलनों ने संविधान का उपयोग कैसे किया है?
- नागरिकों के अधिकार क्या हैं, और वर्तमान समय के समानता, न्याय,भेदभाव-विरोध और नागरिकता के मुद्दों पर संविधान और इसके सिद्धांतों को कैसे लागू किया जा सकता है?
- संविधान,संवैधानिक मूल्यों और विकास क्षेत्र के बीच क्या संबंध है?
- आलोचनात्मक जुड़ाव: प्रतिभागियों कोसंवैधानिकक सिद्धांतों जैसे धर्मनिरपेक्षता, भाईचारा, और समानता के बारे में सोचने के लिए प्रेरित करना, ताकि वे अपने सामाजिक कार्य में इनका उपयोग कर सकें।
कार्यविधि
- इंटरैक्टिव लर्निंग: प्रतिभागी संविधानिक सिद्धांतों के साथ सक्रिय रूप सेजुड़ेंगे।:
- केस लॉ चर्चाएँ: प्रतिभागियों को वास्तविक मामलों के तथ्यों के साथ प्रस्तुत किया जाएगा ताकि वे समूहों में चर्चा कर सकें, जिसके बाद कानून और अदालत के निर्णयों में गहराई से उतरने का अवसर मिलेगा।
- विभिन्न परिदृश्यों के साथ समूह कार्य: समूह अलग-अलग संविधानिक मुद्दों पर काम करेंगे, तुलना करेंगे और मिलकर विचार करेंगे।
- भूमिका और सिमुलेशन: प्रतिभागी संविधानिक सभा, अदालतों, और चुनाव आयोग जैसे संस्थागत निर्णय लेने वाली संस्थाओं का अनुकरण करेंगे।
- रचनात्मक गतिविधियाँ: वीडियो, कविता, और रचनात्मक लेखन का उपयोग करके संविधान को सरल बनाने का प्रयास ताकि प्रतिभागी उससे जुड़ाव समझ सके|
भाषा: कार्यशाला में समावेशी और सरल भाषा का उपयोग किया जाएगा ताकि विविध शैक्षणिक पृष्ठभूमियों के प्रतिभागियों के लिए इसे सुलभ बनाया जा सके। सत्र मुख्य रूप से हिंदी और अंग्रेजी में आयोजित किए जाएंगे। जहां आवश्यक हो, द्विभाषी चर्चाओं (अंग्रेजी और हिंदी) को प्रोत्साहित किया जाएगा ताकि स्पष्टता और समावेशिता सुनिश्चित की जा सके।
4. यह कार्यशाला किसके लिए है?
यह कार्यशाला निम्नलिखित के लिए डिज़ाइन की गई है:
- युवा जो सामाजिक क्षेत्र में काम कर रहे हैं, विशेष रूप से वे जो अधिकार आधारित सक्रियता, सामाजिक न्याय आंदोलनों, या सामुदायिक विकास से जुड़े हैं।
- प्रतिभागी जिनकी भारतीय शासन की बुनियादी समझ है लेकिन वे संविधानिक कानून, संस्थाओं, और लोकतांत्रिक प्रक्रिया में अपनी जुड़ाव और समझ को गहरा करना चाहते हैं।
- व्यक्ति या कॉलेज जाने वाले युवा जो सामाजिक न्याय के प्रति उत्साही हैं और समझना चाहते हैं कि भारतीय संविधान को परिवर्तन के लिए कैसे उपयोग किया जा सकता है।
5. संचालकों के बारे में
संविधानिक कानून, सामाजिक न्याय, और शासन में विशेषज्ञता रखने वाले व्यक्ति इस कार्यशाला का संचालन करेंगे। संचालकों का कानूनी अधिवक्ता, नागरिक जुड़ाव, और हाशिए पर रहने वाले समुदायों के साथ काम करने का अनुभव है| वे चर्चाओं में शैक्षणिक ज्ञान और जमीनी अनुभव लाएंगे, कानूनी ढांचे और संविधान की वास्तविकताओं पर संतुलित दृष्टिकोण प्रदान करेंगे।

कार्यक्रम का शुल्क:
यह कार्यशाला किसी भी सरकारी संस्था या कम्पनी द्वारा आयोजित नहीं की जा रही है। अत: आशा करते हैं प्रतिभागी अपने रहने-खाने की व्यवस्था के कुछ हिस्से को पूरा करने के लिए 4000/- रूपये का अंशदान कर सकते हैं। जो प्रतिभागी अंशदान की राशि में कुछ छूट चाहते हैं, वे आवेदन में अलग से इसका ज़िक्र कर सकते हैं।
